The link on aa.com provided by jrhone is not clear on this point IMO. The text refers to "same day" travel, but the details discuss flights within 12 hours.

Also, this from internal documentation:

Quote:
Travel must occur on the calendar date that's ticketed however, customers may confirm their travel 12 hours prior to the new flight so the phone call may occur on the calendar date before travel. Example: Passenger confirmed on a 6:00 PM flight from LAS to DFW, wanting to use CFC to fly on the 11:30 AM departure from LAS-DFW may call at 11:30 PM the night before and use CFC...

...The new flight must be scheduled to depart within 12-hours but no less than 1-hour from the time the request is made. CFC may be confirmed up to 12 hours in advance of the new flight, even if the timing makes the phone call occur on the day before ticketed travel.

Some rumors 'round that there may be some tinkering-- possibly even involving making "may confirm their travel up to 12 hours prior" "may confirm their travel up to 24 hours prior." Or some other change.

Overview

CONFIRMED FLIGHT CHANGE - Confirmed Flight Change (CFC) will allow passengers, holding a discounted fare ticket that includes a change fee, the option to confirm a seat on a flight instead of traveling standby. They may confirm a seat, subject to rules and procedures listed below, 12 hours prior to the new flight time through Reservations, Self Service Machines or the Ticket Counter.

General Information

On September 8, 2005, American Airlines will introduce Confirmed Flight Change (CFC). This product offers a great new revenue generating opportunity for AA while giving customers what they value - flexibility. Confirmed Flight Change will allow passengers, holding a discounted fare ticket that includes a change fee, the option to confirm a seat on a flight instead of traveling standby. There will be a $25.00 USD fee for the Confirmed Flight Change (CFC) and specific qualifications must be met. This new option is in addition to the current policies we have for free standby as explained in STANDBY POLICY and fare rules.

Effective July 10, 2007, the time is increased to 12 hours-customers may change to a new flight up to 12 hours prior of the scheduled departure time.

Travel must occur on the calendar date that's ticketed however, customers may confirm their travel 12 hours prior to the new flight so the phone call may occur on the calendar date before travel. Example: Passenger confirmed on a 6:00 PM flight from LAS to DFW, wanting to use CFC to fly on the 11:30 AM departure from LAS-DFW may call at 11:30 PM the night before and use CFC.

Qualifications

Fare Rules must allow standby. In addition, we will allow CFC for opaque, OPAQUE bulk CONTRACT BULK and AAdvantage® tickets. Example: Milesavers allow free changes when T inventory is available. When T is not available but E inventory is, you may offer CFC to qualifying customers. Collect $25. If T is available, normal procedures apply and CFC would not be offered.
AA Vacations are eligible-Res will handle. Do NOT refer to AA Vacations.
Applies to ticketed travel date, similar to STANDBY POLICY.
E inventory must be equal to or greater than the number of seats being requested
E inventory is used by Revenue Management to gauge the flight load, it is not used to book the new flight.

The new flight must be scheduled to depart within 12-hours but no less than 1-hour from the time the request is made. CFC may be confirmed up to 12 hours in advance of the new flight, even if the timing makes the phone call occur on the day before ticketed travel.
If the flight departs in less than 1-hour, the ATO must process the request. Advise the customer to go to the self service machine for confirmed standby. Remember that airports have checkin cutoff times and customer also needs sufficient time to go through security.

Res Reps must collect $25.00 USD at the time of the confirmed change.
External Reservation Handling Fee does not apply to tickets issued by an external source
Fee is non refundable.
Routing changes are allowed if the new routing is permitted using the originally purchased fare. I.E. the passenger traveling MIA-DFW-LAX and would prefer to go standby on a MIA-LAX non-stop flight. If the connecting flight fare rules permit the change in routing, it is OK to allow the Confirmed Flight Change option. If the fare is issued as a "sum of local" or when two fares are issued back to back, then the customer must follow the routing of their ticket. Example (which I made up): LAX-DFW-LGA-DFW-LAX, issued as QA7S50QN LAX-DFW-LAX $148 and Q21ES1QN DFW-LGA-DFW $208 plus taxes and fees. Since this is a broken fare in DFW, customer must stay on DFW routing. Also, customer may choose CFC to fly to a connecting point earlier or start their journey when the second flight cannot be confirmed. Example: routing CVG-DFW-SJD may choose earlier flight to DFW, while keeping the DFW- SJD international flight the same. OR customer traveling CVG-DFW-PHX, may choose CVG-DFW earlier flight when connecting flight to PHX is not available and then standby in DFW for second flight.
Routing changes to alternate airports are allowed when free standby would apply as noted in the penalty section of the rule (CHI/HOU/NYC/WAS). I.E. customer holds ticket from LAX-JFK and selects CFC for travel into LGA.
Customers ticketed to/from DFW may use CFC ONLY for alternate DFW flights and customers ticketed to/from DAL may use CFC ONLY for alternate DAL flights. Customers may not switch between DAL and DFW using Confirmed Flight Change.
Customers may cancel their early flight and call back within 12 hours of their new flight to book an alternate for $25. If no seats are available to confirm when the customer calls back, must go standby or pay applicable add collect and change fees per fare rules.
When processing a CFC for flights departing from Indiana, if the new flight is in 2-3 hours the system incorrectly reads the time as being outside the 12 hour CFC window. Enter 25.00 as the Change Fee in the Add Collect table and process as a Ticket Change Fee.

Applicable To

AA, American Eagle, AmericanConnection® flights
Paper and Electronic Tickets
AA segments included on other airline ticket stock as long as the fare basis code allows Confirmed Flight Change.
Routings within/between 50 United States, US Virgin Islands (USVI), Puerto Rico and Caribbean.
If you receive the OB Restrict response, call Revenue Management day of departure desk for assistance-RSD will need to assist you.

Effective March 1, 2006, effective for all cities AA/American Eagle fly to in Canada.
AAdvantage® and revenue tickets including upgrade, AAirpass®, opaque and bulk tickets. Check fare rules to determine if standby is allowed. Does not apply to first/business class tickets-revenue or award redemption travel except for some upgrades as noted below in AAdvantage section. As a reminder, we cannot overbook F/Z/A/C/U/D/X/R/P/I/J inventories.
On the United States domestic portion of an international ticket where a United States domestic fare is charged separately

Important Points

If the confirmed flight change qualifies for revalidation, collect the fee and revalidate the VCR. The Self-Service machines can be used for check-in.
If the confirmed flight change results in a reissue, collect the fee and advise the customer the rest of the process must be completed by the ATO (do not reissue the VCR). Self-Service machines can NOT be used for check-in.
In order to meet the proper call guidelines, offer the customer the option; standby, change fee (CF), or the Confirmed Flight Change (CFC) that best fits their needs.
Do NOT make change to itinerary if you are not collecting the $25 fee.
Itinerary receipts and reprints will show the $25 fee but not the new flight segment since we don't reissue the ticket. Itinerary receipts/reprints will will show the new flight segment when the VCR is revalidated.

Customers Who No Show Their Flight

If a customer calls who has missed their earlier flight, you may allow them to use Confirmed Flight Change when the following apply:

The new travel date is the same as the ticketed travel date. In other words, customer is ticketed for travel on September 21st, misses their flight and now wants to fly on another flight on September 21st. That's ok.
E inventory is available so you can properly book the correct inventory.
New flight departure time is within 12 hours but more than 1 hour.
Collect $25.
If Reval applies for the new flight, please reval and send the customer to the Self Service Machine.
If the ticket must be reissued (customer now connecting in ORD instead of DFW as ticketed), please ask the customer to go to the ticket counter for check in.
If there are no more scheduled flights for the ticketed travel date or if all flights are full in E class, then the customer has lost the value of their ticket. Please explain the fare rules to the customer about calling prior to scheduled flight departure time to preserve the value of their ticket.

Exclusions

The Confirmed Flight Change fee does not apply to any premium cabin booking class inventory, including fares that are sold in coach (YUP type fares) for travel First/Business
The Confirmed Flight Change fee does not apply to any fare booked in Y/B/H inventory.
Note: Most Y/B/H fares do not have a change fee so for consistency, the Confirmed Flight Change fee will not be applied to any fare booked in Y/B/H
Flights outside of the 12-hour window will qualify for normal standby procedures, as allowed by the fare rules. Or, the customer can pay the change fee applicable to the fare rules
AA codeshare flights (AA* flights operated by other airlines)
AAdvantage® Specifics (back to top)

Policy Change eff. September 28, 2007 AACoRN and QIK Res enhancements coming this fall.

Confirmed Flight Change should be handled based on the fare purchased, regardless of the type of upgrade - eVIP, mileage award or electronic.

Determine if fare allows confirmed flight change by reading fare rules.
Determine if E inventory is available.
If yes to both the above, CFC is possible.
Determine if upgrade is available.
If no, determine if passenger wants to make the change without the upgrade.
If so, make the change indicating original inventory as per purchased fare, collect the $25.00 and waitlist (if possible) or request auto upgrade as applicable.

If a mileage upgrade was used and the passenger is not able to get their upgrade the reinstate fee applies and the co-pay (if any) is not refundable.

If yes, make the change allowing space to be booked into upgrade inventory.
Collect $25.00.
