With gold status, the points don't seem to be all that valuable, but gold status does get you room upgrades and an optional late checkout.

For those who aren't aware of this, no elite perks are offered at Novotel, Mercure, Suitehotel, Ibis, AllSeasons, Adagio, except bonus points.

FWIW, I signed up for this and got gold status. We recently stayed overnight at a Novotel in NZ. I reserved some cheap room. At check-in, person said hotel was crowded and she'd upgraded me. I imagined she changed us to a room with a view. We got a very nice two floor suite.

Maybe I just got lucky and we got upgraded for random reasons.

I was disappointed to read this in a FAQ on A-Club, but maybe it's no longer true, or maybe you were lucky like you said.
