Speaking for MAD, there a thousands of wonderful little places-- just pop into any narrow place that has a lot of local-looking people at the bar and the most garbage at their feet! Many of the "better known" places are more oriented towards tourists anyway.

On another note, while there are things that travelingbetter "does better" than other sites (like accurate, nonsense-free, troll-free, valuable and timely AAdvantage info)-- this certainly isn't one of them. This kind of info would be much more abundant and available on a major travel site, BBS, etc.

Thumbs up Tapas

There is a fantastic and historic tapas bar, La Dolores, located just behind the Westin Palace at Plaza de Jesús, 4, Madrid. Phone, 91-429-2243.

Also, near Puerto del Sol is L'Hardy which is quite historic, worth taking a stop to check out the upstairs restaurant, but IMHO limit yourself to a bullion with "jerez" (sherry) downstairs at the standing bar, especially if it's a cold day.

You will need to go to nearby Segovia to enjoy a lechon or other typical Spanish delicacy, but definitely worthwhile to eat at Mesón de Cándido - Azoguejo, 5. - Just below the Aqueduct at the entrance to the old city...what a view--great food too.
