Help with the truth: miles vs evip at the gate?

We have from time-to-time heard, authoritatively, of a SWUs-only at-the-gate for intentional before-- and I assume the policy still is in place (obviously.)

Mike's idea strikes me as an excellent one as the only *possible* defense if ones looking to use miles at the gate.

This was official as of 2006. As to if and how it might have changed since then, unknown:

"..Customers traveling on mileage upgrade awards may not be placed on the airport priority list for an upgrade. They must be confirmed in the upgraded cabin.. [SWU users may still go on said list]"

For future reference, the EXP desk will pre-process the miles upgrade, and put the cert number in the record, if you ask. They will then redeposit the miles with no fee if the upgrade doesn't clear. This makes it much faster and easier for the gate agent to process the upgrade. I realize you are only Gold now but it might be worth trying next time...
