Because a true GPS app from Garmin or TomTom may never show up, I've been using another app as of late -- Navizon. It more or less combines the GPS with Google maps, but it will also position via cell trianguation or wi-fi access points when the GPS signal isn't available.

While it isn't that much of an improvement over the Google map app (especially considering the battery drain), they do have a rewards program for GPS-enabled users, based on the number of unique wi-fi points/cell towers passed. You get a certain number of points for each one found that no one else has found before, but you also get some points if someone else has found it before you (with some exceptions -- namely, Manhattan). You only get credit the first time you find one -- I drive by the same towers every day, but I only got credit the first time I drove by them.

Once you've hit 10k points, you can upgrade from the free version to the full version, or you can redeem for $10 via PayPal. (Free users can only get one reward, but if you get the full version, you can redeem as much as you want.) The full version has some other features, such as trail logging.

Based on my driving around Reno, I was able to go from zero to the full version in about two weeks -- but I'm also driving about 75 miles a day right now, on average. I don't look at it as a full GPS solution, but if I can make a little coin by driving around, I can't complain.

Navizon's website is below. (They have a referral program, but I didn't put my referral code on the link.)

The tomtom app is actually in the AppStore. It isn't getting good reviews though.

I like the look and idea with the Navigon app, but what's keeping me from getting any of these apps is Apple's refusal to let them run in the background, which means things like incoming phone calls will end it, probably at inopportune times.

But, if you like tracking your movements, I really like Motion-X GPS Lite... it traces your path and you can save them. It also includes controls for your iPod. Also right now, the full version is only $2.99 vs. $9.99.

I've really only recently become involved with the wonderful world of apps. I'd love to hear what others are using most. Here are a few I've been playing with:

pUniverse-- Astronomy, shows the sky using GPS and compass-- I love it.

XM/Sirius-- fantatic, but, of course, only if you have a sub

Skype

WhiteNoise-- I always prefer to sleep with a little white noise-- thing is great, and could also be used in headphones when in the air, if desired.

Last.fm and Slacker-- Pandora alternatives that some say have more flexibility

FlightTrack-- is this considered one of the better apps for this? Haven't played with it much but I like the interface very much.

WeatherBug

looking for suggestions for cool, addictive games as well.

In terms of addictive games, I'm all about the simple games that seem stupid until you actually start playing them. Here's what's on my iPhone right now:
- Paper Toss
- CannonGame
- Labyrinth LE
- Labyrinth 3D
- Bubblewrap

I also enjoy the Tap Tap Revenge games, they have a lot of decent music. If you're unfamiliar, TTR is in the same genre as Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

For useful apps, I have the following:
- Photoshop Mobile: Photoshop for your iPhone... does a great job editing photos, which you can then save at a high quality as a new file. Very intuitive.
- Shazam: It listens to a song and tells you what it is, if you don't know.
- AirportStatus: Very basic, but loads quick and the info is readable.
- Google: An app especially for the iPhone, and it's beyond just a search engine. When you search, it gives realtime suggestions and even searches your phone (if, say, you're searching for a contact). The Voice Search feature is the best thing... no need to type and pretty accurate.
- Yelp: I love Yelp, and this is a very good app to look stuff up on the go.
- Facebook: Does it even need mentioning, or is it a given?

Right now, I'm trying out a new app (advertised in American Way) called TripCase, which is put out by Sabre. It's looking good so far. Just sign up for an account and it organizes your trips for you. It's as simple as forwarding your confirmation email to TripCase, and it sorts your itineraries, giving you updates via push notifications and email, and gives you a place to log your trip, like an online journal. It also has the option to look up your itineraries using your record locator (but it didn't work for me... perhaps because I had already started my trip). Includes helpful info such as baggage claim number, maps, weather, and possible alternate flights (with seat availability) on each leg. My one small minor gripe is that it uses MapQuest instead of Google to map out your airports. You can update your info via the iPhone app or logging in at tripcase.com

Oh, and all the apps I mentioned are free

My sister was on the development team for this app. I'll let her know you like it.
