Oh-- don't get me wrong-- OneWorld awards are impossible, impractical or just pain undesirable for -many- destinations.

So, yes, you're 100% correct, the three (or four), connecting one-way awards would be used in those instances. Albeit at a tremendous mileage premium in some cases.

BTW, in your example, technically, NYC-SYD-AKL-NYC, -could-, in fact be done as a OneWorld award. But, there are, of course, many, many (most) that can't.
